What is Epidermolysis Bullosa or EB
EB is a group of inherited conditions in which there is fragility of the skin and mucous membranes. Any friction, rubbing, trauma to skin and/or mucous membranes causes blisters and skin to come off. This condition is not contagious.
An estimated 2 out of every 100,000 Americans have some form of EB. The disorder occurs in every racial, ethnic group throughout the world and affects both sexes equally.
Many people get blisters on their hands and feet from time to time following friction, friction that comes from the continued rubbing of skin against a hard object or surface. People with EB, however, get blisters much more easily and in much greater numbers. In severe EB, blisters seem to form without any apparent friction at all; they can even
form inside the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and respiratory and genitourinary tracts. Severe EB
wounds resemble serious burns-but EB injuries keep recurring. Severely affected individuals or individuals with large
areas of open skin and/or oral blistering (which, may deter from an appropriate nutritional intake) are usually at risk
for infections, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and malnutrition.
